Lexus first unveiled an all-new LX 570 for the 2008 model year, but now the rugged full-size SUV has received a thorough mid-cycle refresh for the latest model year. The LX 570 continues to be the most capable SUV in the Lexus lineup, offering real off-road chops for buyers still seeking luxurious appointments.
Closely related to the similarly refreshed Toyota Land Cruiser, the LX is pricier with the MSRP kicking in at just over $80,000. Like the Land Cruiser, the LX 570 gains a modestly restyled exterior and interior, as well as a few packaging changes for the latest model year.

The face of the LX 570 now sports the new Lexus spindle-style grille, along with new LED daytime running lamps, new and larger fog lamp bezels, a new bumper design and turn signals integrated into the side mirrors, above wider bodyside moldings. The new style continues to the rear with the newly-styled bumper, new LED taillamps, new rear license plate surround, a revised tow hitch cover that is further integrated and a rear bumper protector further enhanced with a stainless steel accent piece.
The interior gains the new Easy Access system, improved cooling for the front seats, a 120-volt power source for the middle row seats, a new design for the instrument panel, a new color display, a dark chrome finish for the center instrument cluster and front side air vents, a new chrome accent above the glove box, a new mahogany wood trim, as well as the replacement of parchment with Cashmere trim as a new interior leather color.
There are also two new exterior colors: Medium Nebula Gray Pearl and Satin Cashmere Metallic, replacing Twilight Gray Metallic and Golden Almond Metallic.
The LX 570 continues to use a potent 5.7-liter V8 that makes 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque, enough to propel the 5900-lb SUV from zero-to-sixty in the mid six-second range. The muscular engine also enables the SUV to tow a substantial 8,500 pounds. A six-speed automatic transmission provides silken shifts and offers a wide spread of gears to maximize efficiency, though fuel economy is about what one might expect: 13 in the city and 18 on the highway, a product of the LX 570's big motor and bigger mass.
The LX offers an optional Luxury Package that includes a cool box for beverages, semi-aniline leather-trimmed upholstery with new contrast stitching, a heated steering wheel, new mahogany wood-trimmed door switch plates, a rear-center armrest cover, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats (outboard position only) and Smart Access card key.
If the Luxury Package doesn’t cut it for you, buyers can plunk down some more cash for a dual screen rear-seat entertainment system with wireless headphones and three-prong electrical outlet. This will be sure to keep the kids busy with movies or video games, each with their own screen and unique signal source.
Other features remain mostly unchanged from the previous model year, ranging from standard 20-inch wheels to an available 19-speaker, 450-watt, 15-channel Mark Levinson Reference sound system.
 
Safety
The new LX features ten standard airbags including driver- and front-passenger knee airbags, second-row seat-mounted side airbags and third-row curtains. Among the many safety features on the new LX are Active Front Headrests, a first for a Lexus utility vehicle, second-row seat belt pretensioners, and a direct tire pressure monitor system.
 
Pricing
Pricing for the Lexus LX 570 starts roughly $10,000 higher than the previous generation, with a sticker base price of around $80,000.
 
Key Competitors
Those looking for a full-size luxury 'ute like the LX 570 with real off-roading abilities should also research the Range Rover, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and the Infiniti QX56. If on-road performance is more of a priority, the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class and Audi Q7 are good options in this class.

The GMC Terrain is a mid-size crossover and is currently the utility brand’s entry-level model. The vehicle first came onto the market late last year as a 2010 model and serves as the replacement for the body-on-frame GMC Envoy SUV. It shares its Theta platform with several crossover models in General Motors’ worldwide vehicle fleet, including the former Saturn Vue and Pontiac Torrent, as well as the Chevrolet Equinox and Opel Antara sold overseas. Inside, there is seating for five.
With the Terrain, GMC has invaded the burgeoning compact and mid-size crossover segments, seeking customers that want a fuel efficient alternative to traditional truck-like SUVs. Not surprisingly, GMC has heavily promoted the Terrain’s impressive fuel-economy, especially for the base 2.4-liter model, which is packed with a number of features to help reduce fuel consumption. This is a good thing because the Terrain, which is priced in the mid-$20,000 range, is considerably more expensive than its rivals like the Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape, both of which start around the $21,000 mark.
The Terrain is available with a range of powertrain options: either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and four- or six-cylinder engines. All models come with direct injection technology to help boost performance and curb fuel consumption, as well as a six-speed automatic transmission.
The base 2.4-liter model features the first four-cylinder engine in a GMC crossover or SUV since the 1980s and it develops a peak output of 182 horsepower. It also delivers a best-in-class fuel economy rating of 21 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway but to achieve this drivers must activate the Terrain’s “ECO” mode. At the push of a button, the Terrain’s torque converter in its automatic transmission lowers the lockup speed to 1,125 rpm to help save fuel.
Through the 2012 model year, the upgrade engine in the Terrain was a 3.0-liter V-6 engine with 264 horsepower on tap. This particular engine was a downsized version of the 3.6-liter V-6 found in several other GM products and in the Terrain it returned a fuel economy of 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. For 2013, GMC replaced the smaller-displacement V-6 with the full 3.6-liter version, good for 301 horsepower--but with identical fuel economy ratings (with a 16/23-mpg rating on all-wheel-drive models).
The Terrain's five-seat cabin is distinguished by a sliding second-row seat that offers flexible cargo and passenger space, though its cargo floor sits rather high.
Standard and available features include a rearview camera, a power tailgate, Bluetooth connectivity, USB and MP3 playback, and a touchscreen-driven audio system with satellite radio and IntelliLink, a system that links smartphones to the audio system, enabling mobile apps like Pandora.
The 2013 model year brings a new Denali edition that offers those features plus a soft-touch dash cap, a mesh grille, and a choice of either the four- or six-cylinder engine, and either 18- or 19-inch wheels with them, respectively. The Denali also gets a leather interior, wood trim on the steering wheel, and a power passenger seat. Denali Terrains also have some exclusive safety features such as blind-spot monitors with cross-traffic alerts--while all Terrains get new dual-action shocks that soften its ride considerably.
Production of the GMC Terrain takes place at GM’s CAMI assembly plant in Ontario, Canada.

Required Vehicle Maintenance for Model Year 2009 and newer

As of model year 2009, Mercedes-Benz vehicles follow a maintenance schedule of 10,000-mile or 12-month intervals, whichever occurs first. Required maintenance is the routine service necessary to keep your vehicle in peak operating condition, and to help avoid damage to your vehicle. For all other model years, refer to your maintenance manual for specific maintenance schedule information.

When you take your Mercedes-Benz to an authorized Mercedes-Benz Dealer for routine maintenance, our technicians use specialized tools, instruments, Genuine Mercedes-Benz Parts, and unmatched technical training to service your vehicle. They follow your maintenance manual in detail to ensure that everything is checked on schedule.

Your Mercedes-Benz Maintenance Booklet specifies exactly what services your Mercedes-Benz technician will perform at each routine service visit.

Recommended Maintenance for Model Year 2009 and newer

In addition to regular required maintenance, recommended service work is intended to provide you with the flexibility to choose the additional maintenance work performed on your vehicle, based on its needs or recommendations from your authorized Mercedes-Benz Dealer.

Beyond any specific recommendations you receive from your Mercedes-Benz technician, you should check the following items regularly and prior to any long trip:

• Engine oil level
• Coolant level
• Brake system fluid level (If brake fluid needs to be added, see an authorized Mercedes-Benz Dealer to determine the cause.)
• Windshield washing system (Add washer fluid mixed with Mercedes-Benz windshield washer solvent/concentrate, test function, and check wiper blades.)
• Tire pressure (Check at least every other week.)

If applicable to your vehicle's configuration, tire rotation should be performed in accordance with the recommended intervals, or sooner at the first signs of irregular (uneven) tread wear. A tire inspection will help determine the need for a tire rotation which may occur at least once between regular Mercedes-Benz maintenance intervals. Check with your authorized Mercedes-Benz Dealership for specific recommendations.

The first rotation inspection occurring at an authorized Mercedes-Benz Dealership at any time up to 5,000 miles is provided at no charge.*

The required maintenance intervals have been determined based on normal operating conditions. Any severe operating conditions may call for more frequent replacement of items such as interior filters, spark plugs, coolant, tires, etc. Checking these items regularly and bringing your vehicle in for service appointments earlier than required, if necessary, will help keep your Mercedes-Benz in top condition.

* In accordance with or as otherwise recommended by your tire manufacturer's instructions. Rotation applies only to vehicles without staggered-width tires. Vehicles with staggered-width tires require inspection instead of rotation. Tires should be rotated/inspected at least once between each service visit.
